DIY Mixture/Recipe
The DIY mixture has been used successfully to trap eWasps by an ACT Beekeeper/Environmental Ecologist.
Note: The below recipe can be used to trap eWasp spring queens and as a bait during the season, it is chemical and honey free.
The key components are fish and fruit jam, both of which are highly attractive to eWasps, combined with yeast to ferment the mix and a detergent to break surface tension.
The fermenting smell draws eWasps in but repels honeybees and native bees, whereas the detergent drowns them more effectively once they enter the trap.
wasp trap mix
- 1 tin tuna or fish-based cat food
- ¼ jar of cheap fruit jam – you want the cheap ones that have lots of sugar
- 1 dessert spoon (approx) yeast
- 1 teaspoon (approx) dishwashing liquid
- 500ml water
Method
Mix everything together and decant into eWasp traps. You want it to be mostly water, but with plenty of smell to draw the foraging eWasps in.
String in tree/s where there is plenty of airflow and clean out every week.
